Ultrasound scans, also known as sonography, use high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the body. Ultrasound is used in many ways. It can check the way a baby is developing during pregnancy and also to find problems in the liver, heart, kidney or abdomen. CHA offers ultrasound testing at all three of our campuses.
An ultrasound is a painless, easy test. A technologist spreads a layer of gel on your skin over the body part being examined. This gel helps conduct the sound waves. The technologist then moves an instrument called a transducer back and forth over your body. Images are seen in black and white on a nearby screen.
Depending on the reason for the test, it may take anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes. One of our expert radiologists will check to make sure the images are usable. You can usually leave right after the test, and the images will be sent to your doctor.
Please call 617-665-1298. To schedule an appointment, you must have a referral order from a primary care provider or specialist.
