CHA Earns The Joint Commission’s Health Care Equity Certification

CHA recognized for excellence in efforts to provide equitable care, treatment, and services

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), a community health system serving Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston's metro-north communities, has earned The Joint Commission's Health Care Equity Certification for excellence in its efforts to provide equitable care, treatment and services. Cambridge Health Alliance has demonstrated that it has established structures and processes in place to decrease health care disparities within its patient populations and to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion for staff.

Cambridge Health Alliance underwent a rigorous onsite review from April 9-11, 2025. A surveyor from The Joint Commission visited CHA's emergency departments and three inpatient campuses to validate CHA's commitment to and compliance with a comprehensive set of standards that define best practices in health care equity. The staff he spoke with, the medical records he reviewed, and the data he was provided all exemplified CHA's commitment to its patients and communities, and caring for them and their health-related social needs. He learned about CHA's high reliability journey and how its commitment to high reliability supports building equity among its workforce.

"This new Joint Commission certification clearly demonstrates how CHA's mission and vision are in action each and every day," said Assaad Sayah, MD, CEO of Cambridge Health Alliance. "Our surveyor saw the organization's commitment to serving a diverse patient population and the immense pride with which our staff and providers work to care for our patients."
"Health Care Equity Certification distinguishes those organizations that have made health care equity a strategic priority and those that collaborate with patients, families, caregivers and external organizations to help translate equitable health care into better health outcomes," said Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing officer, The Joint Commission. "We commend Cambridge Health Alliance for using The Joint Commission's certification process to promote that all its patient populations receive access to equitable care, treatment and services."
